Measuring Cups, Measuring Spoons and Scales, OH MY!!

Like I said, I'm refocusing - I'm getting back. From weight watchers I learned how important measuring cups, spoons & scales are.

Oh, I used my scale and I looked at the cups & spoons in admiration as they sat there shining in the kitchen ceiling light. After all, I can eye-ball it..... after all how hard can it be? *evil laughter and rubbing hands together from that inner voice that helped me get to where I am*

This week I got those shiny measuring units dirty. I took out an apple, mixed up the natural peanut butter - read the label 2 T, I only need 1 - then came out the tablespoon and a knife *no cheating today!!* .... um, THAT'S A TABLESPOON?!?!?! *big sigh...then another big sigh* I will eat the apple with some low fat cheese. (dice sized and on the scale)

WHAT'S COOKING

Dianne Bunis

A crisp, healthy cracker that takes less than 30 minutes to make, and there's nothing artificial about them! These crackers can be served with cheese, hummus, pesto or simply snacked on as they are.

Whole wheat seeded crackers

makes 4 large crackers

1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour, plus more for dusting rolling pin

1 tbsp. flaxseed meal (Bob's Red Mill)

1/3 cup sesame seeds, toasted

1/2 tsp. coarse salt

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 tsp. local honey

Freshly ground pepper, sea salt and caraway seeds for topping

1. Heat oven to 350°. To toast sesame seeds, place raw seeds in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet, place in oven for about 2 1/2 minutes, then turn and bake for another 2 1/2 minutes, until light brown.

2. Mix flour, flaxseed meal, toasted sesame seeds and salt together in a bowl. Stir in oil and add 6 to 8 tbsp. water (fill a measuring cup with water and use a measuring spoon to add the water), knead until dough

Favorite Things: In the Kitchen
Measuring Spoons — My mother-in-law gifted me with the most delicate measuring spoons I think I've ever seen this past Christmas. From Anthropologie, the stems of the spoons are designed to appear as coral and the delicate measures have scripted font.

Portion control and the gadgets we use everyday have a lot in common
Because we are unlikely to stuff our purses and pockets with measuring cups and spoons, we must train our eyes. Reality may be quite shocking for folks used to gobbling half-pounders and overflowing plates of pasta. Look at your computer mouse.

Just a little touch
She never used measuring spoons. She would just add a touch of this and a touch of that. It seemed that she knew what additions to add to get the right taste. Oh! I do recall folks using the word “touch” when they were uncertain of an outcome of a

What's Not to Love About Google's New Recipe Search? Plenty.
In the classes I teach, I occasionally hide the measuring spoons so my students learn to trust their tastebuds. David Lebovitz of DavidLebovitz.com tested one of his recipes with rich snippets; Google would not accept a cooking instruction of “2 to 3
