Jelly Knife - Miniature Masterpieces

I'm an artist from Sioux City, Iowa. I grew up in Grand Island, Nebraska and have lived in Sioux City since 1989. Visit my website at www.darrenmaurer.com to see the full volume of my work. For this blog I'm going to try to make a painting each day. I may miss a day here and there just due to that thing called life. The paintings on this blog will be small oils. (I like to call them Miniature Masterpieces.) On occasion I may post a larger painting with the dimensions listed. I'm going to use an auction format (via ebay) to sell the Miniture Masterpieces. Paintings that don't sell at auction can be seen in the archive section and can be purchased with a personal check, money order, pay pal, or major credit cards through pay pal at the listed price.

Sam Venable: On the sharp edge of history

I was tickling computer keys a few nights ago, ordering replacement blades for one of my electric fish-filleting knives.

Typically, I prefer to make all of my purchases - hats to hardware, jeans to jelly - in person, in front of a real, live salesclerk, at a brick-and-mortar retail store. Trouble is, retail stores can't match the inventory of a warehouse the size of Neyland Stadium located half a continent away, yet conveniently linked to my house via the Internet. Thus the occasional need to cyber-shop.

Everything was going along swimmingly until a message, spelled in red letters, popped up on the screen. It said I had to confirm that I was 18 before the sale could proceed.

Huh? I didn't have to give my age when I bought this knife. Or any other knife, electric or manual, that I can recall.

Perhaps this regulation only applies to online sales. If so, it makes no sense because there was no way to verify my claim.

For all I know, the computer would have taken it as gospel truth if I had listed my age as 114 - although considering how digitized advertisements magically appear in bunches, this likely would have exposed me to a screen full of campaigns for Depends, motorized chairs and beeper devices that blare, "I've fallen and I can't get up!" the instant I attempted to log-off. But I digress.
