Supercar fondue at big Swiss show

For a country with no car industry of its own, Switzerland still manages, once a year, to play host to the most important motor show of the year.

The Geneva motor show, or the Salon International De L'Auto to give it its correct title, is simply the biggest car industry bunfight of the season, with American, European, Japanese, Korean car makers meeting on neutral ground to show their latest wares to the world.

While the emphasis for the past few years at Geneva has been, not surprisingly, on green technology and lowering emissions, this year, horsepower and sexy styling came to the fore once more.

Lamborghini brought along its €3-million Veneno supercar, with its 740bhp and 354kmh top speed. Porsche debuted a new 911 GT3 that can sprint to 100kmh in just 3.5 seconds.

Rolls-Royce's new Wraith coupe may be more focused on comfort than those two, but it still comes with a mighty 624bhp V12 engine and then there was the full production version of McLaren's mind-bending P1 supercar, which combines power from a turbo V8 and an electric motor to devastating effect.
