Viewpoint: Marc Perlman, president of Ocean State Job Lot
Marc Perlman ’s seen it all in his 30-plus years as a wheeling and dealing retailer of eclectic merchandise, and he's one of the few vendors aggressively seeking big-box space in the Bay State.
He’s sold everything from the high-end to the low brow, from Ralph Lauren silverware to odd-sized slippers and Connecticut state prisoner jumpsuits. Best of all, he’s sold it all at prices that keep customers coming back for more.
Since co-founding Ocean State Job Lot in 1977, Perlman and his brother Alan have built a $500 million-in-revenue empire with 100 stores. They also hold myriad stakes in a network of restaurants, manufacturing firms and other small businesses throughout the Northeast. Their interests also have a philanthropic bent, something that has not gone unnoticed among the local medical community as well as Massachusetts food pantries.
Perlman recently met with Boston Business Journal Real Estate Editor Craig Douglas at Ocean State’s Dedham store to discuss the company’s growth plans in Massachusetts as well as the challenges of running a business, both big and small, in today's regulatory climate.
