Southampton - As we try to go greener at home, many of us are searching for more environmentally friendly cleaning products. One category that's been generating some controversy over the last couple of years is phosphate-free dishwashing detergents.

A little background: phosphates are added to detergents to boost their cleaning power. They help break up grease and prevent spotting and filming, especially in areas where the water is hard (contains calcium and magnesium ions). Phosphates are undeniably effective. The problem with them is that they cause harmful water pollution.

Phosphorus is a fertilizer (it's the "P" in the N-P-K ratios found on bags of garden fertilizer). Septic systems and sewage treatment plants can't remove all the phosphorus from wastewater, so the excess finds its way into bays, rivers, streams and lakes. When too much of it gets into bodies of water, like our bays, it feeds the growth of algae. Too much algae in turn sucks up oxygen
