Camping 101: Workshop to help novices get comfy outdoors
If you've never been camping and have been afraid to give it a try, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wants to help you.
For the first time, the state parks division will bring its Texas Outdoor Family program to El Paso and Franklin Mountains State Park.
The program is designed to teach people who have never been camping the basics of the activity and give them the confidence to later do it on their own, said Cesar Mendez, park superintendent for the Franklin Mountains.
The overnight workshop will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and finish at 10 a.m. Sunday.
All you need to bring is a sleeping bag, food, water, your personal items and a "lot of enthusiasm," Mendez said.
Organizers of the program will provide tents, lanterns, silverware, air mattresses, sleeping pads, stoves, fuel, cookware such as pots and other equipment necessary for activities.
It promises to be a full day of fun and educational activities, Mendez said.
