Tell me how you became owners of Cooks of Crocus Hill.

Karl: I was a partner since I joined the business. Martha Kemmer, one of the original owners, retired in 2008, and we acquired the balance of the business. Marie only really acquired my piece by marrying me. (He laughs.)

Marie: I started working for Cooks as a consultant 19 years ago. One thing has led to another, and now we own it.

What's the philosophy behind the stores?

Karl: Sharing discoveries about food.

Marie: That has been the philosophy since Martha started it.

What's your first food memory?

Karl: When I was 7, we went back to Sweden to visit my dad's farm. After a day of traveling, my grandmother made liverwurst sandwiches on fresh-baked bread. They
