Tres Leches cake the standout at Brazilian café
Café Samba, a more casual, tapas-inspired companion dining room to Madison's popular Samba Grill, provides a lesson in just how far the local dining scene has come in recent years.
More than ever, the details, and the basics, count: Is the oil used to fry the chips fresh? What's the quality of the meat and produce, and what was prepared on site? Do the servers understand the menu?
By these measures, Café Samba falls a bit flat, although it has a pleasant atmosphere with a decent bar, a bargain happy hour and some unusual elements on its Brazilian-influenced menu.
The restaurant occupies the lower level of the beautifully restored, historic Woman's Building, which also houses the more upscale Samba Grill. The décor is contemporary but warm, with the dark wood tones of the bar and furniture brightened by vivid accent colors and lovely photos, presumably taken in Brazil. The adjacent outdoor café has lots of potential. But some broken chairs and spindly plants struggling to grow in their too-big containers don't exactly pay off the promise of a lush, sophisticated South American garden.
