Baseball and cupcakes make a sweet team
As Major League Baseball heads into the midsummer classic (also known as the All-Star Game), a local couple with deep baseball ties are looking to continue their hot streak ---- in the cupcake industry.
Danielle and Paul Stiritz have matched their mutual love of baseball with Danielle's passion for baking to open Batter Up! Cupcakes in Rancho Bernardo (with a second location in the works).
Danielle's ties to baseball were formed from the moment she was born: She's the great-grand-niece of Hall of Fame player and manager Casey Stengel. After meeting and working in minor league baseball, the couple were considering opening their own business, when friends found success in Reno, Nev., (Danielle's hometown) with a cupcake shop.
One night, the couple discussed doing the same in North San Diego County, where Paul grew up. Danielle grew up baking with her mother and grandmother, and she adopted a pound-cake-style cupcake from a family friend.
Fast-forward to October 2009, and Batter Up! opened its doors.
