McClellan: German Chocolate Cake delights dessert lovers
Not until 1957, though, did the first “German’s Chocolate Cake” appear on the scene when a homemaker from Dallas created the cake and sent the recipe to the Dallas Morning News. The recipe became very popular, and the recipe was soon distributed to many other newspapers across the country.
I remember my mother making it many times when I would bring friends home from Baylor University not too long after the recipe first became popular. After spending many hours looking for my mother and sister’s versions of this delectable cake, my niece found it and shared it with me. Once again, I urge you to get family recipes while they are still available to you from the people who have them. Mother’s and Virginia’s version was just a little different from the original.
