On Saturday afternoon, cooks and outdoors enthusiasts could be found around two campfires at Bells Mill park. The Hamilton County Conservation Board sponsored a hands-on educational program, cooking with campfires and dutch ovens.

John Laird, a park ranger and naturalist, was in charge of the event. He said that the idea was to get people outside to learn about cooking with fire. Cooking over fire was essential to our ancestors, but today it's become something of a lost art.

"So many people go out camping, and have their microwave and stove back in their camper," Laird said. "They sit around the fire and visit, maybe cook some s'mores, but that's it. We're trying to get back to the basics here."

Also volunteering were Laird's son, Josh; Quinton Westrum; and Lyle Jennings, from Huxley. Jennings is a camping enthusiast who brought a large assortment of his own cast-iron pots and pans to show at the event. He said that he likes to break the mold and find new ways to cook over fire. "Fortunately, my friends like to be guinea pigs for my new recipes," he said.
