In January this year at least 20 Australians tested positive to Listeriosis and authorities believe it was after consuming cheese from one particular manufacturer.
The factory implicated supplied products to outlets across the nation and this led to customers being affected in multiple states and locations.
More recently, a number of patients in Sydney hospitals became quite unwell after eating meals believed to be contaminated with Listeria.
This food poisoning led to illness and even death in the case of a man who was already quite unwell. These patients were believed to have been the victims of eating Listeria-tainted profiteroles.
"Listeria monocytogenes" is the guilty party in these outbreaks of disease and is a bacterium that can be found just about everywhere. It is present in many of the birds and animals we use for meat as well as in the soil that we grow our fruit and vegetables.
It usually gets from the source to its human victim through the food we eat. Food that has been allowed to stand outside of refrigeration for any period of time is a common cause of many types of food poisoning. Salad bars, soft serve ice cream, soft runny cheeses, any unpasteurised dairy food, left over meats (such as those sausages and steaks from yesterday's barbecue) as well as raw seafood and unwashed raw vegetables are the most common culprits. In the United Kingdom, raw eggs have been implicated in some cases.
